Braille at the Pappajohn Sculpture Park

Braille has been placed on the descriptive placards at the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines.Braille has been incorporated into the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines to give blind and visually impaired visitors an idea of what art is on display. The Braille is placed on placards that describe the 24 large sculptures that make up the two-block park, which stretches from 13th to 15 streets between Grand and Locust and opened in September 2009.
The park is a collaboration between the City of Des Moines and the Des Moines Art Center.
Currently, it is prohibited to touch the sculpture, and some of the sculptures have motion-sensored alarms that will sound if a person gets too close.
Guided tours of the park will be available beginning April 1 through Oct. 31.
