Braille Transcriber

As a Braille transcriber, you will transcribe print materials into Braille using a Braille transcription program on a computer.   This volunteering task provides critical job-related and educational materials to blind and visually impaired Iowans. 

What We Provide

  • All equipment and supplies are provided, but you can use your own computer for the correspondence course
  • Training provided at no cost

What You Will Gain

  • By performing the the Braille transcription tasks, you will learn Braille
  • The enjoyment of working independently, in your own home, on your own schedule
  • New knowledge through exposure to variety of ideas and disciplines
  • Satisfaction knowing your skill helps those not able to use print

Required Transcription Training

We request that all Braille transcribers complete a Braille transcription correspondence course:

  • Sponsored by National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS); administered by the National Federation of the Blind (NFB)
  • Average training period – 1 year
  • IDB Mentor grades lessons, provides assistance
  • Literary Certification awarded with successful completion of course
  • Additional training and certifications in math or music available
