Studio Narrator

What does a Studio Narrator do?

  • A studio narrator reads books or other printed materials while being recorded.  The audio recording is then put into a digital format that becomes a digital talking book that a blind or print disabled person can use.

Where does a Studio Narrator narrate?

  • Studio Narrator volunteers narrate in our state of the art recording studio located at the Iowa Department for the Blind.  A recording engineer is present during the recording and monitors equipment while you narrate from a voice-over booth.

How often should a Studio Narrator narrate?

  • Because you would be volunterring your time, it is really up to you.  Most studio narrators complete 2-hour sessions, once or twice a week.  The recording studio is open 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The average adult novel may take 10-15 sessions to complete
Audition Required
  • Narrators must go through an audition
  • Audition materials will be provided
  • Audition takes place in our studio and last about 45 minutes
  • Evaluation based on voice quality, speech habits, accuracy, interpretation, and ability to follow formatting instructions and recognize reading errors
Narrator Requirements
  • Must be 18 or older
  • Possess a good vocabulary
  • Be prepared to meet deadlines
  • Accept varied assignments and constructive advice
  • Commit to completing at least one assignment
  • Enjoy working with a recording team
  • Be attentive to detail
  • Be responsible and dependable
